The two frameworks of technology that I feel are important to understand as one integrates technology are the Triple E Framework and
The Triple E Framework was an idea that was developed by Dr. Liz Kolb for teachers to use as they design their instruction. The 'Triple E' stands for the Engagement, Enhancement, and Extension of the learning goals of the teacher. Engagement refers to students participating in active learning activities that are focused on the learning goals. Enhancement refers to students learning in technological and educational learning activities because technology creates many new and creative ways to learn! Finally, extension refers the opportunity for students to use technology in order to make a connection between school and the outside world.
According to EdTech Center @ World Education, Triple E Framework is a four step process:
- Define learning goals
- Select an appropriate technology tool
- Engage students with the tool by having them be active and social learners
- Connect what students are learning with real world tasks and contexts. Technology tools are used in class as a way to connect what students are learning with real-world tasks and contexts.
This image summarizes the Triple E Framework nicely!
The RAT framework is the second theory used as a basis to ensure proper integration of technology. It stands for Replacement, Amplification, and Transformation. This model allows educators to assess whether or not technology is being used as a replacement, amplification or transformation within the classroom. This is a very important question that all teachers should ask themselves as they use technology, what is the role of technology in my classroom?
The following video is on the PIC RAT model. It does a great job of properly summarizing the RAT model as well as giving concrete examples of how it should be played out in the classroom!
After careful studying of the previous two frameworks, my idea of wise technological integration has been expanded. These two frameworks give educators a pathway to follow as we navigate teaching in the 21st century. The Triple E framework gives us guidelines on how to properly integrate technology in the classroom so the instruction that we give is engaging to the students, enhances their learning, and allows students to make real world connections through the use of properly implement technology. The RAT framework gives teachers the opportunity to assess their instruction. Are we using technology to give our students the fullest opportunities to thrive? Technology should never take the place of the teacher, but we teachers should be careful to use technologies fullest potential within our classrooms!
